Kindergarten - Monroe

Hello!

We’ve been really focusing on our writing skills this past week. Hopefully you saw the “Santa letters” we wrote. If you opened and read them before you sent them to the North Pole, you might have noticed some phonetic spelling (“ras cr” instead of “race car”). Right now in the early stages of writing we focus on phonetic spelling instead of conventional spelling to build their confidence and give them some independence in their writing and it’s fun for them to use the sounds they know to begin putting words together. If they’re writing something at home, praise them for sounding it out, and then you can still feel free to tell them “This is a funny word and we actually spell it like this.” The first writing assignment of the year is always a challenging one for them and I was very impressed with how well they did!

This week we’ll be doing some more writing and talking all about the gingerbread man. We’ll compare different versions of the story, make our own giant illustrations, and it’s possible the sneaky Gingerbread Man himself will lead us on a wild chase.

The school is also doing our annual Penny Wars! If you would like to send your scholar with any loose change you’re certainly welcome to. I could also use your help with making sure toys aren’t being brought to school. Mostly they’ve been staying in backpacks but some scholars have been getting a little distracted or have brought things to trade with other scholars.
