Class Procedures

  • You and Me Points: Each day, I will keep track of points. When the whole class is following our classroom rules and procedures as expected, I will give you a point. When the whole class, or majority of the class, is not following our rules and procedures, I will give myself a point. At the end of the day, if you have more points than I do, you will get a star for the day. If we tie, you will get a T for the day. If I have more points than you do, you get nothing. On Fridays, you will have free time, earned by the number of stars you get. Each star will be worth 4 minutes of free time.

  • Morning Procedure: When you come into class, you will stop at the filing cabinet and move only your own lunch magnet. Take your books and folders out of your backpack, then hang it up on your hook. Get your badge and your Chromebook. You may sharpen pencils during this time if you need to. You will use voices no louder than “normal” (see volume chart) until the bell rings at 8:15. At this time, voices will be “silent” (see volume chart) and you will work on your assigned morning work, as posted on the board.

  • Lining Up: When it is time to line up, I will say, “Please line up.” I will begin counting down from 10 and turn off the lights. I do not mind quiet talking, or “spy talk” (see volume chart) while you are lining up, but when I get to zero, everyone must be in two straight lines, facing forward, with their voices off. If anyone is talking at that time, or not lined up, we will practice lining up until we can do it correctly.

  • Walking in Line: We will walk silently in the halls. Talking in the halls is an automatic clip down. This includes having your head turned and your lips moving, even if there is no sound coming out. I will not talk in the halls either, so if you have something to say to me, you must wait until we are back in the classroom.

  • Entering the classroom: Any time we return to class, you may spend a minute or two getting a drink, gathering needed materials and returning to your seat. I will count down during this time, or play a song over the speaker. It is okay to use voices up to “normal” (see volume chart) during this time, but when the song ends, or I get to zero, everyone must be in their seat, “ready to learn.” This means your eyes are on me, your ears are listening, your knees are under your desk, and your hands are still.

  • Late students: If at any time during the day you arrive late, you will put your things away silently, gather what is needed for the subject we are in, and join the class without any talking to classmates or the teacher. I will wave at you, to let you know I see you, and will talk with you privately about why you are late, what you missed, and what we are doing as soon as I can. If you are coming in late for the day, and it is before lunch, remember to do your lunch count before sitting down at your seat.

  • Missed work: If you have missed an assignment because you were absent, I will talk to you about what you missed during enrichment time, at the end of the day. Together we will decide on a reasonable due date for the work you missed. If you have a missing assignment because you did not do the work, or finish the work, or any other reason, you will need to talk to me about whether or not you can make it up, and if so, when the deadline is for turning it in. You can do this during enrichment, at the end of the day.

  • Missing materials: It is important that you have and use your materials at the right time. If you notice you are missing materials outside of my classroom, and I have not begun teaching, quickly go get what you need. If I have already begun teaching, raise your hand and let me know what you are missing. I will decide whether or not I want you to leave to go get it. If you find you have lost your pencil, or it broke, follow the “pencil procedure.”

  • Pencils: I will give you 5 pencils the first day of school. I will give you up to 5 new pencils at the beginning of each week after that. I do not hand out pencils during class. I do not allow any pencil sharpening during class. You may sharpen pencils before school, during transition times, enrichment and clean up. If your pencil breaks during class, or you find you do not have one, for any reason, quietly ask your neighbor(s) if you can borrow one. The next time you are allowed to move around, you can check the lost and found for a pencil and return the one you borrowed to your neighbor. If someone asks you to borrow a pencil, and you have one, I expect you to loan them one. If something happens to it while they have the pencil, I will replace it for you after class.

  • Passing out materials: When it is time to pass out materials and supplies, the Supply person will do it. If they need extra help, I will ask someone to help them. Supply people will start at the front of the class and go all the way across the row to hand out supplies. They will then turn and do the next row, etc. Supply people will not skip around giving supplies to certain people first. The supply person will not talk to you while handing out supplies, and you should not talk to them. Asking for specific colors, etc. is not allowed.

  • Instruction: While I am instructing the whole-class, I expect you to stay in your seats, in learning position, listening carefully. If you have an emergency during instruction (you might have an accident, throw up, or you are bleeding), you may leave your seat to take care of it and let me know what happened when you get back. If you have something to say during instruction, wait for me to ask for comments and questions. Often, I will have you share your thoughts with a neighbor. This is not a time to talk to friends, sharpen pencils, get a drink, go to the bathroom (non-emergency), read or draw. It is a time for you to get the information you need from me to succeed. If you are missing materials during instruction, follow the “missing materials” procedure.

  • Exiting the classroom/Transition Time: When we exit the classroom as a group, we will line up using our procedure, then keep our voices off the entire time we are in the hall. We will keep our hands and feet to ourselves in line, and remain facing forward. When you are exiting the classroom on your own for ability groups, you can sharpen pencils, go to the bathroom, and get a drink if you need to. You are allowed to use “spy talk” voices while gathering your things and walking to your group. When you get to your group class, follow your group teacher’s procedure for entering their classroom.

  • Lunch: You will need your badge when you go to lunch. If you do not have your badge, you need to get a post it note and write your lunch number on it. It is important that you get the lunch you chose with your magnet. You cannot change your mind when you get there. During lunch, the aides are in charge. Be respectful and proactive. Clean up after yourselves when you are finished eating. Any reports of bad behavior will be a clip down.

  • Recess: You are not allowed to take anything out to recess with you. Toys and personal sports equipment will be taken from you and given to me. You will get them back at the end of the day, unless it is an ongoing problem. Then your parents will have to get them from me. During recess, the aides are in charge. You should give them the same respect you give me. Be respectful and proactive.  Any reports of bad behavior will be a clip down.

  • Bathroom: You can use the bathroom before school, during lunch, recess, transition and clean up times. I do not allow you to use the bathroom during instruction. If you are working independently, and it cannot wait, you must check with me before leaving.

  • Drinks: You can get drinks before school, during lunch, recess, transition, and clean up times. If you are working independently, you can get a drink as needed, as long as it does not become excessive. You may bring water bottles, but they must be kept on the floor under your desk. If they become a distraction or are causing other problems, we will have to change this rule.

  • Corrections and Disagreeing in Class: It is possible that someone in class (including the teacher) may say something that is incorrect, or that you do not agree with. If this happens, raise your hand and wait to be called on. When it is your turn to talk, calmly and respectfully explain what you think is correct. Allow others to express their opinions and agree to disagree if necessary.

  • Independent  Work: When it is time to work on your own, I will say, “This is independent work.” Most of the time, I will turn on music to remind you that there is no talking. I will also adjust the volume knob. If you are talking during this time, you will have to clip down.

  • Partner Work: When it is time to work with a partner, I will say, “This is partner work.” I will usually assign you a partner. If I want you to choose a partner, I will tell you. Do not ask. During partner work, both partners must be actively participating. Listen to each other and be respectful. Be proactive. If you have a problem you cannot resolve, calmly and quietly ask me for help. Check the volume knob to see how much noise is appropriate for the activity/assignment.

  • Group Work: When it is time to work as a group, I will say, “This is group work.”  I will usually assign you to a group. If I want you to choose your group, I will tell you. You do not need to ask. During group work, everyone must be actively participating. Listen to each other and be respectful. Be proactive. Synergize. If you have a problem you cannot resolve, calmly and quietly ask me for help.  Check the volume knob to see how much noise is appropriate for the activity/assignment.

  • Specialties: I may or may not be in the classroom during specialties. Either way, I am not in charge during that time. If you have a question or concern, ask the specialty teacher. I expect you to show the same respect to specialty teachers that you show to me. Any reports of bad behavior will be a clip down.

  • Aides and Volunteers: You will give Aides and volunteers the same respect you give me in the classroom, in the halls, in the lunchroom and on the playground. Any reports of bad behavior will be a clip down.

  • Other Adults: When an adult enters the room, you will wait silently until I am finished talking to them. If it is going to be more than a minute, I will give you permission to talk quietly and adjust the volume knob appropriately.

  • Enrichment: This is time at the end of the day to work on your homework or read silently. It is not time to visit and play. You may only use chromebooks for IXL Math. If you need to make up missing work on the computer, or work with another student, you need to check with me first. I will sign DLP’s during this time.

  • Enrichment Plus: This will be on Fridays only. If you are missing any assignments, you will work on them during this time. If you do not have what you need to work on them, you will read silently during this time. If you are not missing any assignments, you will be allowed to use the chromebooks for any of the approved websites.

  • Clean Up: Those with jobs will quickly get their jobs done, if needed. Everyone else will use this time to tidy their desks, clean up the floor, sharpen pencils and pack up their stuff. By the time clean up is over, the room should be clean, with nothing on the floor, and everyone should be ready to line up for carpool.

  • Carpool: When the timer goes off, walker-bikers will line up at the door and wait to be led down the hall. The rest of the class will stay in their seats. You may talk quietly until I begin the lining up procedure.
